Deuteronomy 6:10-19 (HCSB)
Remembering God through Obedience
10 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land He swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that He would give you—a land with large and beautiful cities that you did not build, 11 houses full of every good thing that you did not fill them with, wells dug that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful not to forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.13 Fear Yahweh your God, worship Him, and take your oaths in His name. 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you, 15 for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. Otherwise, the Lord your God will become angry with you and wipe you off the face of the earth. 16 Do not test the Lord your God as you tested Him at Massah.
17 Carefully observe the commands of the Lord your God, the decrees and statutes He has commanded you.
18 Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight, so that you may prosper and so that you may enter and possess the good land the Lord your God swore to give your fathers, 19 by driving out all your enemies before you, as the Lord has said.

The time spent reading Deuteronomy 6:10–19, I came to understand the depth and wisdom of God’s warning to His people and to us. In these verses, Moses is reminding Israel that when they enter the Promised Land, a land full of blessings they didn’t earn, houses they didn’t build, wells they didn’t dig, and vineyards they didn’t plant, they must not forget our Lord gave it all to them. That really spoke to me, because it’s so easy to seek God in seasons of struggle, but then slowly disconnect and become distant from Him when life gets easier. The heart of this passage is about remembering. God knew that success, comfort, and abundance could tempt His people to grow spiritually lazy or proud. He warns them don’t let the gifts make you forget for Whom all these blessings flow. That message is just as relevant for us today. When God blesses us with a job, a home, a family, or peace of mind, it’s not the time to grow complacent; it’s the time to draw even closer to Him in gratitude and obedience. What challenged me personally is verse 13, where we’re told to "fear the Lord your God, serve Him only." In a world full of distractions and idols, whether it’s money, approval, or comfort, God calls us to be wholeheartedly loyal. Not out of obligation, but because He loves us fiercely and wants what’s best for us. Just like the Israelites, we’re warned not to test God, but to trust Him by walking in His ways. So today, let’s pause and look at the blessings in our lives. Let’s ask ourselves: have we grown so comfortable that we’ve forgotten to be thankful? Are we honoring God with the life He’s generously given us? I want to encourage you, as I remind myself, to stay anchored in God, especially when things are going well. Let’s keep our hearts humble, our worship sincere, and our devotion strong. Because when we remember the Lord in all seasons, we walk in the fullness of His blessing and purpose.
Let’s pray: Lord, thank You for every good thing You’ve provided. Help us not to forget You when life is full and going well. Keep our hearts grounded in gratitude and obedience and remind us that You are the source of all we have. May we honor You in every season whether blessing or trial and walk faithfully with You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
