1 Samuel 3:15-18  (HCSB)
15 Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the Lord’s house. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,” answered Samuel. 17 “What was the message He gave you?” Eli asked. “Don’t hide it from me. May God punish you and do so severely if you hide anything from me that He told you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything and did not hide anything from him. Eli responded, “He is the Lord. He will do what He thinks is good.”

Here we have two important lessons. The first is shown through Samuel. He had a divine revelation from the Lord during the night that he fears could significantly alter his relationship with his mentor, friend, and superior (Eli), yet he got up the next day and faithfully completed the duties God assigned to him (duties at the temple and conveying the Lord’s message to Eli). Samuel was faithful and obedient in action despite not knowing what the outcome would be. Additionally, Eli shows great reverence for the Lord. After learning the prophecy of his sons’ pending death, he still respects and honors God’s power, justice, and will. He accepts heartbreaking news without altering his view of God, blaming God, or lashing out against God. Eli recognizes that God must be true to His character. He must do what He said He would do, and Eli’s sons’ sin must be atoned for.
