Questions for the Week

1.  We live in a culture that has serious disagreements with God’s laws. In fact, they are often called “oppressive.” How can you explain that godly obedience is not oppressive? What is the connection between obedience and assurance for the believer (1 Jn. 2:3-11)? How does knowing God lead to obedience?

2.  Love involves deep affection for someone. How is the supernatural love of God different than the superficial “love” that is tossed around today (1 Jn. 4:7-12)? Knowing that love stems from God, is it possible for unbelievers to truly love? Why/why not? How are their attempts at love broken? How can explaining true love be a segue into gospel conversations?

3.  First John 5:1-5 lists several marks of true faith. Among them –belief in Jesus as Messiah, love for God, love for believers, and obedience to God. Are there any others you would list (knowing this isn’t intended to be a comprehensive description)? Who do you struggle to love? Where do you struggle to obey God (and fail at loving Him)?
