Questions for the Week
DECEMBER 23, 2023
1. Read through the list of names in Jesus’ genealogy in Matthew 1:1-17. Arethere anyguys’ names that stick out to you? What do you remember about them? Now look at the 5 women listed. Why include them? What do you remember about them? You could trace Jesus’ genealogy back to Abraham several ways. Why use this one?
2. Put yourself in Joseph’s shoes if you can. How hard would it be to keep believing Jesus’ birth was special –that Mary was a virgin? That Jesus wasn’t just any boy? Did Joseph ever get aggravated at Jesus, like a normal parent, even though Jesus never sinned? How would Joseph explain Jesus’ divinity/humanity when people would ask?
3. Raising Jesus likely meant extreme hardship as Satan tried to thwart God’s plan. While not easy, it’s easier to trust God when you can see how He HAS worked and how He IS working. Would Mary and Joseph have understood Micah 5:2 (see Mt. 2:6) being fulfilled in Jesus? How does returning from Egypt fulfill Hosea 11:1 (see Mt. 2:15)? What is actually “fulfilled” in Mt. 2:17-18 and 2:23?
