Matthew 8:14-17 (HCSB)
Healings at Capernaum
14 When Jesus went into Peter’s house, He saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 So He touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and began to serve Him. 16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick, 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: He Himself took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.
Pastor HD Jones
There is so much here in these few verses. First, let me point out that Peter was married; he had a mother-in-law. How difficult was it for him to leave his business and be away from home during Jesus’ earthly ministry? We forget that these were real people with real issues. We also know from scripture that only Jesus and Peter had to pay the temple tax which means the other disciples with them that day had either already paid or were less than 20 years old. I will let you figure that out. Jesus healed all those that were brought to Him. What a beautiful picture that Jesus didn’t make them fill out a questionnaire, or pay a fee, or even devote themselves to His ministry. We know many people just came by for the free stuff then went on with life. Have you ever felt that way in church? So many people come to our community events and never help clean up or offer to help pay or even have the decency to come back to worship with us. Let Jesus be our example and just serve people. It has it’s own reward.
