Questions for the Week

  1. Lazarus leaving the tomb is the last of John’s “signs.” Jesus intentionally waits until Lazarus dies before going to see the family. The disciples don’t even want to go. Why? Was their fear reasonable (given Jesus impending crucifixion)? If they had listened to their fears instead of Jesus, what would they have missed? What fear is affecting your relationship with God?
  2. By the time Jesus got to Bethany, Lazarus was dead 4 days. Why does Jesus weep even though He knows Lazarus will rise? How was Jesus’ waiting a more loving response than saving Him from dying at all? How did raising Lazarus make Jesus’ statement that He is the “resurrection and life” more powerful? Why do we get more of Jesus when life gets hard? Where are you experiencing hard things? Do you trust Jesus there? Why/why not?
  3. What does it mean when Jesus says He prayed so that those around Him “may believe” (vs. 42)? Why do some of the leaders still NOT believe (vs. 46)? Why were some more concerned with their “place and nation” than believing in Jesus (vs. 48)? Though a good concern, why is it less important than faith? Where are you more concerned with good than God?
