Questions for the Week

  1. Why are we often so tempted to try to earn our salvation instead of trusting God’s gracious gift? What did the author mean by “re-crucifying” Jesus (vs. 6:6)? Why is it encouraging that our hope of salvation is based in  1) God’s promises and   2) God’s inability to lie (6:16-17)?
  2. For most of the OT, Levitical priests were the mediator between God and man. How is Jesus better than them and the sacrificial system (7:26-28)? How is Jesus a better hope (7:19)? What does it reveal about God’s nature and character that He sent Jesus as the perfect mediator and sacrifice?
  3. How would you explain the OT sacrificial system? How did the litany of sacrifices and offerings point to Jesus  (10:1)?  Since God knew the sacrificial system would never fix the problem of sin, why would He ever start it (10:4)? What did it teach us about our sinfulness (10:11)? What did it teach us about Jesus’ sacrifice?
