Psalm 23:4 (HCSB)
4 Even when I go through the darkest valley,
I fear no danger, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me.
Nathan Putty
Here we have David describing how God protects and cares for us even in the darkest of times. Again, David would have been speaking from personal experience. A certain fight with Goliath comes to mind. Sticking with the shepherd analogy, David uses the rod and staff, which are the tools a shepherd uses to guide his flock. He uses this to explain how God gives His people protection and guidance through the worst life offers. Your darkest day might look different from mine, but we all traverse life’s valleys. Disease, loss of a loved one, financial struggles. None of us escapes these inevitable facts of life. The question is, are we leaning and relying on God in both the good and bad times? I suppose we who are Christians are on a spectrum when it comes to our reliance on God. But I think we can all try to give our troubles to Him a bit more and as David says, “fear no danger.”
