Ephesians 2:19-22 (HCSB)
19 So then you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. 21 The whole building, being put together by Him, grows into a holy sanctuary in the Lord. 22 You also are being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.

When Temple started the excavation for the building pad underneath our new sanctuary, the contractor ran into some soft soils. The ground failed a compaction test, so it had to be removed several feet deep and replaced with many loads of large rock. Then the rock had to be compacted and leveled to create a strong building pad for the new sanctuary. If the ground and the pad underneath any large building is not solid, the foundation and walls will eventually start to crack and could fall apart. The same thing applies to our church body. We know that the church is not the building, but the people that make up the church. Paul reminds us today that the family of God is like a building where the apostles and the prophets are important stones at the bottom of the building. Jesus is the most important stone, the corner stone, that holds the entire building together. The members of our church comprise the rest of the “building body” and what a blessing to have the apostles, the prophets, and most importantly Jesus Christ to build our church upon. He will not fail. As you end the week take a moment and listen to the words of Cody Carnes’ song, Firm Foundation, and remember that Christ is your firm foundation, and He won’t fail.
