John 14:1-4 (HCSB)
The Way to the Father 14 “Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. 3 If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. 4 You know the way to where I am going.”
David Bale
When vacationing in the summer growing up, one of the things that my sister and I always loved doing toward the end of each day’s travels was thumbing through the ‘AAA triptik’ travel planner and reading about all the motel/hotel options in the city, where we’d be staying (remember, no internet or GPS back then). We couldn’t wait to open the door to see what that night’s room would look like!! Jesus is speaking these words to His disciples, which are meant to comfort them and prepare them for what is to come; even though they do not fully understand all of this yet. There are few verses in Scripture that describe eternal life, but these few verses are rich with promises. Here Jesus says, “I am going there to prepare a place for you,” and “I will come back and take you to be with Me.” Can you even imagine what the rooms in God’s house might look like? Knowing all the specifics of our eternal destination is impossible, but we can look forward to eternal life, because Jesus has promised it to all who believe in Him.
