Sunday Connect Lesson for June 11, 2023
SEE A NEED AND MEET IT
The events of the book of Nehemiah took place just after those of the book of Ezra (445 BC-431 BC) with Nehemiah arriving in Jerusalem in 444 BC, 13 years after Ezra arrived.
Study The Word: Nehemiah was not a priest or a king. He was exiled to Babylon where he was on the serving staff of King Cyrus. When he heard of the difficulties of the survivors in Jerusalem, he was moved to request to be allowed to return to Jerusalem to offer aid.
Key Truth: God places His people in positions to meet needs (Nehemiah 1:1-3,11b; 2:1). It was no coincidence that Nehemiah learned of the difficulties of those in Jerusalem.
Key Truth: Believers should respond to needs with compassion and action (Nehemiah 1:4-11). Prayerfully Nehemiah approached God for direction in knowing what to do to help.
Key Truth: For believers, leading is serving (Nehemiah 2:2-20). In response to need, with permission from the king, and in obedience to God, Nehemiah assembled a group to return to Jerusalem. Their work would be rebuilding the walls of the city.
