Faith Under Fire

The events in the book of Daniel took place during the time when God's people had been taken into captivity by the Babylonians and later the Medo- Persian Empire from 605 BC to 536 BC.

Study The Word: One of the hardest temptations to resist is the temptation to fit in. This isn't merely true for children and teenagers, but for adults as well.  In Daniel 3 we learn how to stand out instead of fitting in.

Key Truth: Following the one true God may put us in the minority (Daniel 3:1-12). King Nebuchadnezzar set up an enormous golden image and gathered all the kingdom officials at its "big reveal." But Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow down.

Key Truth: Following the one true God may put us at risk (Daniel 3:13-23). Even when the king singled them out and gave them another chance (and threats) to bow down, the three Hebrew men refused. They courageously chose the king's punishment by fire instead of idol worship.

Key Truth: Choosing to be true to God is a witness to those around us (Daniel 3:24-30).  Though they were thrown into the fiery furnace, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were unharmed. God's protection and presence were clearly evident. The Hebrews' faithfulness provided an opportunity for God to be glorified.

Family Connection: Continue the discussion after church!
What is idolatry? Give some examples of idols in our culture. How did Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego stand against idolatry? How did God protect the three men? What are some situations where you might have to stand against idolatry?
