Numbers 20:1-5 (HCSB)
Water from the Rock
20 The entire Israelite community entered the Wilderness of Zin in the first month, and they settled in Kadesh. Miriam died and was buried there.
2 There was no water for the community, so they assembled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The people quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the Lord. 4 Why have you brought the Lord’s assembly into this wilderness for us and our livestock to die here? 5 Why have you led us up from Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It’s not a place of grain, figs, vines, and pomegranates, and there is no water to drink!”
Natalie Cannon
While it is difficult to imagine the Israelite’s faith wavering after being brought out of Egypt in such a miraculous way, this passage proves that they were struggling with their trust in God’s plan. They were thirsty, hungry, tired and grieving the loss of Miriam. You know it must have been rough when the people suggest that they would have been better off dead in Egypt. God never promised that following Him would be easy, but He does promise to never leave us. We must hold on to hope and remain faithful even when we face difficulties. We must not grumble but have fortitude to stay the course, knowing that God’s plan for us may not be easy but it is for His glory.
