Psalm 46:4-7 (HCSB)
4 There is a river—
its streams delight the city of God,
the holy dwelling place of the Most High.
5 God is within her; she will not be toppled.
God will help her when the morning dawns.
6 Nations rage, kingdoms topple;
the earth melts when He lifts His voice.
7 The Lord of Hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah
Michael Jackson
I grew up on the Buffalo National River in Northwest Arkansas. More than once I sat at that river and thought about how many centuries it took to craft it into the beautiful thing it is today. It took time to make it what it is now. Over time, the river changed courses, cutting new paths and abandoning old, but always winding its way to where it was going. I’ve sat and dreamed about that, too. Where does a piece of wood go when you pitch it into the current and watch it disappear out of sight? Does someone else find it without you ever knowing? Does it make its way to the sea? Does an eagle swoop down and pick it up to finish its grand nest somewhere high above those bluffs? There are so many things we can’t know in our short lives here on the planet. And that can be overwhelming at times. It’s the not knowing that is worrisome, and the feeling of having no control over where things are going. Just as God put stories in the scripture for us to read to reassure us He has a plan, He also comforts us with His Word that He is taking us to a place so grand some day we can’t even imagine it. I have to believe Him, because I see so many things that testify to His creation, His love for people, His concern for me individually, and proof that His scripture is true. Verse 4 in today’s scripture has a special meaning to me right now, and I want to share that with you. “There’s a river whose streams make glad the city of God.” Wow. He had to have been talking about the Buffalo. That must be the peace that makes His city so glad ...... Ain’t He good?
