Colossians 3:12-17 (HCSB)
The Christian Life
12 Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,13 accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive. 14 Above all, put on love—the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful. 16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Do you ever get halfway through your day and realize you’re wearing the wrong thing? Maybe the weather changed. Maybe the vibe changed. Maybe you changed. That’s how it can feel spiritually too, like we left the house without the right gear. Paul tells us what to put on, every single day and it’s not about the outside. He says clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. That’s what should walk into the room before you do. One of my favorite things to do is go out to eat and often that’s way too late at night if you know our family! I love to engage in a conversation with the waiter and, if capable, to leave a generous tip. One of the reasons that I like to do this is because my mom and grandmother were waitresses and I know countless times, as a child, people’s tips paid for my clothes, shoes, etc... But our ultimate desire in doing this is that we hope that they see Jesus in our family and hopefully notice there was something different about us. To clothe our self in humility, I think we need to be reminded often that we brought nothing into this world, and we will take nothing out of it. Also, God created the people around us whether we like them or not, and they should be treated as such even when it is hard.
Here’s the challenge: Before you walk into any room this week —your home, practice, school, church, work —stop and ask: “What am I wearing spiritually right now?” Pride or humility? Frustration or patience?Coldness or kindness? If what’s on you doesn’t look like Jesus, go change! And here’s the real test —when someone pushes your buttons, frustrates you, or lets you down, can you still show up in love, patience, and forgiveness? This week, don’t just memorize the verse, live it.
•Ask God to highlight one person you need to show compassion to.
•Pick one area where you’ve been impatient or sharp —and let gentleness lead instead.
•And before you speak, let thankfulness be the tone in your voice, not just the idea in your head.
Prayer: God, remind me today who I am: chosen, holy, and deeply loved by You. Help me wear what reflects You: compassion, kindness, humility, patience, and love. Let peace be what steadies me, and thankfulness be what comes out of me. I want my life to speak Your name before my mouth does. Amen
