James 3:7-12 (HCSB)
7 Every sea creature, reptile, bird, or animal is tamed and has been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 We praise our Lord and Father with it, and we curse men who are made in God’s likeness with it. 10 Praising and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers, these things should not be this way. 11 Does a spring pour out sweet and bitter water from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a saltwater spring yield fresh water.
Mark Jenkins
James is pointing out how different the tongue is. Animals can be tamed by humans, yet humans cannot control their tongue. Out of the same mouth we can have praise and cursing. As we mature in our walk with Christ, we should be building character and taming the tongue. Why is it so difficult to tame the tongue? The tongue is a small part of the body but it can defile the whole person...and can be full of deadly poison. God says it is impossible for man to control his tongue on his own. From the first sin in Genesis, God has imputed sin to all mankind. Every human is born with a wicked heart and an evil sin nature. Hatred, bitterness, jealousy and pride are all sins we deal with...the tongue holds all of these and other destructive tendencies. Problems of the heart and tongue cannot be solved by human power. The resurrected Christ in us is the only way to control the tongue. How do we get that power? It is only available to those who turn their lives over to HIM! Have you given your heart and tongue to Jesus? Are you reading His Word, talking with Him, building a relationship with Him every day? Let’s strive, not just this week, but every week to tame our tongues and produce positiveness for God’s Kingdom!
