Genuine Faith
James 2:14-17 (HCSB)
Faith and Works

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can his faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way faith, if it doesn’t have works, is dead by itself.

When you study the Bible, you find that God’s Word is presented to us in many different ways: you have stories of adventure, mysterious parables, and supernatural transformations, just to name a few. The Book of James is one of my favorite books of the Bible. There’s no frills here; just the plain spoken, to the point, Word of God. Today’s verses speak to the inseparable bond between faith and works. What’s more important in God’s eyes: faith or works? We still debate this question in our churches today. As I write this, our church is gearing up for the Mission 615 Fish Fry this Saturday. It’s always a big event. It’s a great way for our church to show the love of God not just through His Word, but through our actions as well. We see Jesus meeting the physical needs of others in miraculous ways in the Gospels, and James speaks to the importance of meeting those needs here in Verse 15. This is a hot button topic for James, and we’ll continue to discuss it in the days to come. Think about how your faith informs your works (and vice versa) as we study together this week.
