Matthew 6:16-18  (HCSB)
How to Fast
16 “Whenever you fast, don’t be sad-faced like the hypocrites. For they make their faces unattractive so their fasting is obvious to people. I assure you: They’ve got their reward! 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head, and wash your face, 18 so that you don’t show your fasting to people but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Are you beginning to sense a theme with Jesus' words about acting in secret? Can I just share with you that I love to eat?! As any good Southern woman, I also love to cook and feed people. It brings me so much joy. My heart really sings when they eat seconds. My REAL group can tell you that once I get hungry, we have about 15 minutes before things get really serious with my attitude! But what about fasting? The Bible has much to say about it. How, and even why, we fast is detailed for us to honor Him. Fasting, as it is described in this passage, is for the sole purpose of deepening the believer's walk with God. Just like performing righteous acts (service, giving, worship and prayer), if the person is putting on a show for man, that is where the blessing ends. But when fasting occurs in secret, between us and God, with the purpose to honor God and strengthen our relationship with Him, the result will be eternal and will glorify Him alone.
