JESUS’S WORDS HAVE AUTHORITY
Matthew 7:1-6 (HCSB)
Do Not Judge

7 “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 For with the judgment you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the log in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a log in your eye? 5 Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6 Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them with their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces.

Some of my favorite parts of the Bible are when Jesus gets a little spicy with His words. Maybe it’s because I’m a little sassy myself but, mostly, I just appreciate the frankness. There’s nothing to decipher here. Jesus is saying, in a very our Lord and Savior way, “you worry about yourself,” and I love it. Of course, it’s in our sinful human nature to ignore our own flaws and shortcomings but be quick to notice someone else’s. But we are called to be different. We all like to quote Proverbs 3:5-6, John 3:16, James 1:2-4 and so on, but I’m thinking I should add Matthew 7:1-2 to the perpetual scripture loop running through my head. My children, my marriage, shoot maybe even my community, would be better for it.
