QUESTIONS FOR THE WEEK

1.      Jeremiah is known as the “Weeping Prophet” because God used him to prophesy punishment.   Jeremiah 31:15 describes some of that weeping. If you knew your sin would end in tears, would you still do it? Interestingly, the very next verse speaks of God blessing wayward Israel by bringing them back to the Promised Land. How does God’s grace remind you of His love?

2.      At one point in Israel’s history, a proverb went around saying that you were punished for your father’s sin and your kids were punished for yours (Jer. 31:29). This would seem to make God unfair and unrighteous. When do you feel unrewarded for righteousness? Where do feel you unjustly punished for another’s sin? Where do you find it hard to trust that God is “fair”?

3.       In the new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34), God makes 7 “I will” statements – 2 saying a new covenant is coming and 5 describing it. In that covenant, (1) the law will be in us and (2) on our hearts, (3) God will be our God, (4) we will be forgiven, and (5) our sin will be remembered no more. Which promise is easiest for you to trust? Which is hardest?
