Romans 8:12-17 (HCSB)
The Holy Spirit’s Ministries

12 So then, brothers, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs —heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—seeing that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Choices. We all make hundreds of decisions every day. Some decisions have good consequences, and some decisions have not so good consequences. In this section of Scripture, Paul is once again pointing out that you have a choice, live according to the flesh or according to the Spirit. Paul uses the word “adoption” in v16, indicating a couple things: 1) you are part of a family and 2) you are not alone. I look at my children and think about the ways I lead them, guide them, watch over and protect them. Then I think about how God promises and does the same for me and you. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you are all alone, or that no one understands what you’re going through. God does and He is always with you. What will you choose? Remember there are consequences for either decision.
